Scoring

Explore how your chosen style of Mahjong scores a hand.

For a beginner, the most important scoring rule is simple:

First make a legal Mahjong. Then determine its value from the card and the rules used by your group.

The value on the card

American Mahjong cards assign a value to each listed hand.

When a player declares Mahjong, first verify that the completed tiles exactly match the chosen hand.

Check:

  1. the correct hand
  2. the correct suits
  3. the correct groupings
  4. the correct number of tiles
  5. concealed or exposed requirements
  6. legal Joker use

Once the hand is confirmed, use the value printed for that hand as the basis for scoring.

Table rules can vary

Payment conventions, bonuses, penalties, and tournament procedures can differ depending on the card, organization, or house rules being used.

For those details, follow the current American Mahjong card and rules source used by your group.
