About M|G Mahjong
M|G Mahjong grew out of a casual conversation about a mahjong set we wanted, but couldn't find. Tiles inspired by nature — real plants, real creatures — illustrated with the same care as a field guide. Elegant enough to leave out on a table. As beautiful to look at as they are to play. Many (many!) sketches, moodboards, and color swatches later, we have the sets we dreamed of.
We're Michigan natives, through and through, and there's nothing quite like watching the seasons change in our beloved mitten state — the long summer sunsets, cozy campfires with friends and family, the icy quiet of a Michigan winter. That connection to place, and the people we share it with, is stitched into everything we make. Every new set will carry that same thread: honest detail, meaningful places, and more reasons to gather around the table.
Giving back is something we believe in — and something mahjong has always done, bringing people together for causes bigger than the table. That spirit matters to us too, which is why a portion of every set supports an organization close to our hearts.
See you at the table,
Katie and Tracy
How we give back
A portion of our proceeds go directly to Blandford Nature Center, a local nature preserve and 501(c)(3) nonprofit in West Michigan dedicated to wildlife education. The nature center rehabilitates animals no longer able to survive in the wild. In addition, Blandford boasts an impressive farm with a variety of livestock and over 200 varieties of plants and vegetables. The Blandford Nature School also offers a unique sixth-grade program that combines hands-on outdoor learning with a rigorous academic curriculum. Through its nature-based approach, the school encourages environmental awareness, creative thinking, leadership, intellectual growth, and self-confidence.
P.S. A note on our illustrations
Every tile and hand-painted mat was brought to life by Maggie Bowen, Katie's niece. She and Katie have shared a love of the natural world for as long as they can remember — birds, shells, trees, wildflowers — and Maggie has the rare gift of capturing all of it on paper. Her passion for nature took root at Blandford Nature School, where she learned about the flora and fauna of her home state, created birding booklets, and discovered how to identify edible plants.
Maggie is currently pursuing a PhD in Robotics and Neuroscience at Sorbonne University in Paris, France. Living in Paris has reignited her interest in the arts through oil painting courses, watercoloring in local parks, and hikes in the Fontainebleau forest. This collection wouldn't be what it is without her, and she hopes her designs resonate with other passionate nature-lovers.
